Northern Star

Northern Star

A Country Ballad about Self-Worth.

by manyface music

After my divorce, I had a few friends who were incredibly supportive. During that time, I spent a lot of hours reflecting on my relationship and talking with them about their own lives. I’m not perfect, but I try to be there for my friends the way they are there for me.

One thing that I kept coming back to was how hard many women are on themselves. I started thinking about how much of that pressure comes from societal expectations and the people we’re taught to idolize. It’s no wonder so many feel like they have to be a certain way to be valued.

Before writing Northern Star, I kept thinking about how much I wished they could see themselves the way the people who care about them do.

That’s really what the song is about.

Northern Star by Manyface Music is about the idea that even when someone doubts themselves, they can still be a guiding light in someone else’s life.

And honestly, it hasn’t surprised me that the people who’ve told me the song resonated with them the most, the ones who’ve gotten emotional hearing it, have mostly been women.

So to anyone out there who doubts themselves :

Please don’t beat yourself up.

You are enough.

You are somebody’s Northern Star…even if you own mind doesn’t always tell you that.

"She thinks she's just beyond repair, but I see her still standin' there."

Northern Star (I See Her) Lyrics - Manyface Music

					[Verse 1]
She sits and looks,
Through another self-help book.
Puts names to another hundred demons,
Workin’ on that long long list of reasons -
All the ways she ain’t good enough.
Like why’s she so damn hard to love?
And why’s she always givin’ up?
Why’s she the last t’speak her mind,
But she’ll blame herself most every time.

[Chorus]
She sees the scars - I see the fight.
She sees what’s wrong - I see what’s right.
She thinks she’s just beyond repair,
But I see her still standin’ there.
Oh, she sees the cracks - I see the light.
She sees the end - I see the start.
I see her heart.
She thinks she’s just beyond repair,
But I see her still standin’ there.

[Verse 2]
She sits and looks,
In another mirrored nook.
Fallin’ prey to her own gaze,
Pointing out another hundred ways -
Why her body ain’t good enough.
Like why’s she different than at prom?
Or why she’s shaped like someone’s Mom.
Oh, she’s ashamed of growin’ lines,
Like bein’ real’s some kinda crime.

[Bridge]
But I see grace in every line,
And strength in what the world calls time.
She don’t know her glow ain’t tied to youth,
Wish she could see her like I do.
Instead she just -
Overthinks each little thing,
Thinks love’s a test and she can’t win.
Worried she might drag me down too far,
Like girl, no you’re my northern star.

[Chorus]
She sees the scars - I see the fight.
She sees what’s wrong - I see what's right.
She thinks she’s just beyond repair,
But I see her still standin’ there.
Oh, she sees cracks - I see the light.
She sees the end - I see the start.
I see her heart.
She thinks she’s just beyond repair,
But I see her still standin’ there.

[Outro]
Yeah, she's the reason I'm still breathin'
In this air.
Oh, yes you are - my northern star.
