The Deep Below

The Deep Below

An Alt-Pop Ballad about Heartbreak.

by manyface music

The Deep Below was inspired by the poem “When Sailing O’er The Tropic Sea” part of “The Coral Gift” or “The Lovers of the Deep : In Four Cantos” published in 1841 by an ancestor of mine, Edward Augustus McLaughlin.

After reading his poem, I was inspired by what was happening in my life at the time, and decided to rework components of it into what would become The Deep Below

The poem is about a sailor longing to return to shore, and I wanted to run with that concept and the heartbreak I was feeling at the time, to tell the story of a man lost at sea as a metaphor for heartbreak.

"Yeah, I still feel her in the thunder's roll. Hear her echo from the deep below."

The Deep Below Lyrics - Manyface Music

					[Verse 1]
The stars trail down their brows of light,
To wash away what they once were.
And through the watches of the night,
I breathe in the salted air -
And think of her.

[Chorus]
But I wade - where she’ll never go.
So I wait - for the lighthouse glow.
And it fades - then suddenly, I start to see:
I am shipwrecked on you.

[Verse 2]
And that polar star shall guide me far -
Over a desert, boisterous deep ;
While each fonder thought, a kiss that ought to find her -
In the hour of her sleep.

[Chorus]
So I wade - where she’ll never go.
And I wait - for the lighthouse glow.
But it fades - and suddenly, I start to see:
I am shipwrecked on you.

[Bridge]
Yeah, I still feel her in the thunder’s roll -
Hear her echo from the deep below.
Her voice rings out like a siren song -
And I pray that it won’t be too long…

[Chorus]
But still I wade - where she’ll never go.
And now I wait - for the lighthouse glow.
And pray…
To God that it won’t fade.

[Outro]
But I am already too far gone.
