The Cost

The Cost

An Alt-Rap Confession about Regret.

by manyface music

The Cost is my “do as a I say, not as I do” song. The idea behind the song is simple : Everything costs something.

There’s a cost to making the wrong choices.

There’s a cost to staying quiet.

There’s a cosst to trying to be what other people need you to be.

And there’s a cost to ignoring what you actually want.

For a long time, I thought I was doing the right thing. Being strong, holding things together, pushing through. But that has a price too. And eventually…you pay it.

The repetition is intentional. Because often it doesn’t just happen once. It stacks. Small decisions. Compromises. Things you tell yourself don’t matter at the time. Until one day, you look around and realize…you’re not where you wanted to be.

The line “no one is worth not pursuing your dreams” really became the center of the song.

Not because it’s easy advice…but because it’s something I learned the hard way.

And this isn’t me talking from a pedestal. It’s more like – don’t do what I did. Or at least…don’t wait as long as I did.

"I've made mistakes, I wouldn't repeat. I've still got scrapes on both of my knees."

The Cost Lyrics - Manyface Music

					[Spoken Intro]
Now for something I never said out loud.
Hope my therapist will be proud.
Just kidding I’m doing this shit for me -
My therapist ain’t here right now.

[Verse 1]
There is a cost for doing it wrong -
There is a cost to always be strong -
There is a cost when you don’t belong -
There is a cost to bury it all -
Hell, there’s even a cost…for writing these songs.
I guess what I’m tryin’ to tell you is how -
I’m still payin’ the cost right now.
Cuz I’m still lyin’ and havin’ my doubts -
I’m still tryin’ to figure it out -
I’m still cryin’ some of the nights -
Tryin’ to heal - tryin’ to write.
Tryin’ to feel - only feel wiped.
But I’m still breathin’ and trying to fight.
Trying to shed - some of this light -
Hopin’ it might - be worth somethin’ despite…
The fact that I never followed it.

[Chorus]
They’ll tell you -
Do as I say, not as I do.
Guess that’s kinda true…
If you look at it from my point-of-view.
Cuz -
I’ve made mistakes I wouldn’t repeat,
I’ve still got scrapes on both of my knees,
But I’m still here and tryin’ to plead -
Get you to listen, get you to concede -
That no matter how great they seem…
No one is worth not pursuing your dreams.

[Verse 2]
And there is a cost for doing it wrong -
There is a cost to always be strong -
There is a cost when you don’t belong -
There is a cost to bury it all -
So I’ll try to change…while I write these songs.
So maybe… I won’t have to pay the cost next time.
I won’t have to try to remember my lines.
I won’t have to try to give words and define -
What’s going on in this broken head of mine.

[Outro]
So if you’re here, and listening to this story of how -
I’m still payin’ the cost right now.
Do I as I say, not as I do.
No really, it’s true - tryin’a give you a clue,
Pay the cost right now -
So you never have to tell your story of how…
